Early Spring 2009 Proposed Field Trip by motor coach to Trinity (Boston), Church of the Advent (Boston), and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, lunch in the city. Mrs. Gardner was altar guild directress of the Church of the Advent on Brimmer Street for many years and acquired many beautiful things for the church. Her museum contains many wonderful vintage vestments and religious objets d’art. One great story about Mrs. Gardner is that during Lent she would wash the high altar steps of the church on her knees, dressed all in black, while her maid knelt beside her carrying a sterling silver basin of soap and water. The portrait of Isabella below is by Sargent.
